b'SCIENCES & CAREERSStevan BarbourFor those who enjoyed the BBC TV series Vigil in September, a career talk by an engineer in the Royal Navy was very well timed! Stevan Barbour made a heartfelt plea to all the girls in the audience to consider careers in STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths). Although these careers have historically been dominated by men, there is a significant push by many employers, the Navy included, to make the working environment more supportive. Stevan said he was looking forward to working with his first female boss on his next deployment.This was the first of a series of career and motivational talks we have lined up for our students this year, with roughly one speaker a month planned for Sixth Form talks. In October we welcomed Charlotte Bloomfield, a radiographer in the NHS.Careers DayOn Thursday 9th December all of Year 9 attended a careers day hosted by Plymouth University. The aim of the visit was to get students thinking about their Next Steps after school, with a general introduction to Higher Education and what university life might look and feel like, before visiting different faculties across the campus to experience some of the courses on offer.
