Rights Respecting School Award

South Dartmoor Community College places children’s rights at the heart of our ethos and culture. This is fundamentally important for the promotion of well-being and to ensure every child’s talents and abilities are fully realised. Therefore, we are currently working towards UNICEF’s UK “Rights Respecting Schools’ Silver Award.

UNICEF is the world’s leading organisation working for young people and their rights. In 1989, governments across the world agreed that all children have the same rights by adopting the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC). These rights are based on what a child needs to survive, grow, participate and fulfil their potential.

We have already received our bronze award in recognition to our commitment to teaching about children rights and looking at ways to place rights and respect at the heart of our everyday practice.

The rights of the community are important; with parents and carers forming a vital part of our journey to becoming a Right Respecting School.

Further information on the convention on the Rights of the Child, which underpins the process, can be found at  unicef.org.uk/crc .
