Discovering Dartmoor
Geographical enrichment “happened” to Year 8 students on a very lovely sunny Thursday. Three coaches disgorged their audibly excited contents at Hound Tor car park at 10am, and in a mass start resembling the start of the Plymouth half marathon, the students challenged themselves to a race to the top.
Once there, Mr. Hodges delivered a brief history of the formation of tors to the panting assembly before the rest of the walk strung itself across our most picturesque hinterland. With oohs! and aahs! punctuating the rest of the day, a huge amount of cultural capital and equal amounts of character building was benevolently beaten into our wonderful students.
The most amazing moment unfolded at the top of Rippon tor, when keen volunteers selected to continue on foot all the way back to SDCC, with every one of them completing the 9.5 miles full of smiles, but with slightly fewer oohs and quite a few more aaagghs!
Huge thanks to all staff involved, and every student who made it a truly special day out.
