Ten Tors Raises £4,000

A group of keen walkers recently organised South Dartmoor Community College's own Ten Tors challenge, to raise money for our Outdoor Education Department. The trekkers undertook a 35 mile route across the North Moor in Ten Tors style, including wild camping, with a medal and a pasty at the finish line.

The participants raised an amazing £4,000, far more than the organisers had hoped for. It will help students with the cost of training, future expeditions and specific kit requirements - making the Ten Tors more accessible to all students.

Katie Upton, the Outdoor Education Manager who runs the Ten Tors training and DofE, said: "This incredible achievement will help to support so many students at South Dartmoor and Atrium, so they too can benefit from these experiences.

"South Dartmoor has had an incredible track record for Ten Tors entries over the years, with great success and an ever growing successful DofE programme offering all three levels of the award. None of this would be possible without the time, commitment and good will of the college staff and many volunteers from the community."

Steve Dinnie, former Head of Sport at the college and supporter of the outdoor education team, presented the medals and commended the efforts of the staff and volunteers to bring this event together. He praised their training, support and dedication throughout the season and on expeditions. Mr Dinnie said: "These events are so important for young people to build confidence, relationships and fitness as well as learning vital skills and gaining a sense of belonging. It is fantastic that South Dartmoor is able to offer these opportunities".

Further thanks go to the following local businesses which sponsored the event, to keep it as close to the real Ten Tors experience as possible: E & JW Glenning, Tom's Country Store, Dartmoor Butchers and the Exeter Inn.

Many of this year's trekkers have decided they want to do it again, so if this has piqued your interest please contact heatherbelle.bates@ishelp.co.uk More details will be available at our information evening at South Dartmoor on Thursday 14th October at 6.30pm in the Atrium building at South Dartmoor.
