STEM trip to Plymouth University

Our Year 9 students showed commitment and enthusiasm during our recent trip to Plymouth University. The university was celebrating science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) in a showcase event.

All the students threw themselves into the interactive exhibits which filled the Faculty of Science and Engineering marquee. There were a range of stands hosted by academics, ambassadors and external exhibitors. Students explored their interests in areas such as: retro games, understanding the power of our oceans, and marine biology. The exhibits ranged from Google Earth virtual reality to amazing invertebrates, arcade game technology to icebergs melting.

Information was shared on what it is like to study at university, the courses available, the financial aspects and the wider student life opportunities on offer. More than 90% of the students expressed a possible interest in studying in these areas. One student said: “I thought the technology area was fascinating. I liked all the robotics and games, I thought the possibility of doing that when I’m older was awesome.”

Our students were a credit to the school, asking astute questions and engaging with a number of challenges. It was great to see our school values being displayed on a wider stage and very notable that they were willing to take a risk, move out of their comfort zone in unfamiliar situations.

A big thank from Mrs. Rashidi and Mr. Richards to all the students who attended.
