Author Visit

We were delighted to welcome Carnegie Medal–nominated YA author Nicola Garrard. Nicola grew up in Ashburton and has family connections to SDCC, so she was especially excited to speak and work with our students.
She delivered a series of inspiring assemblies to Years 7, 10 and 12 about her latest book, On the Edge, set in South Devon. She spoke about how she uses her writing to raise awareness of local issues, including the impact of tourism and rural poverty on young people.

She also led a group of KS3 students in a creative writing workshop, giving them an insight into her writing process and an opportunity to express themselves while embracing the importance of taking creative risks.
We are very grateful for her visit and are already seeing how her inspiration has encouraged some of our young writers.
