A Warm Welcome to the Sixth Form
Our focus at Sixth Form is that ‘futures are made in the present’ and this informs everything we do from our curriculum offer through to our enrichment and career development activities. We are proud of our reputation as an inclusive Sixth Form that enables all students to achieve the highest levels of attainment. Our A level progress measure underlines this commitment and places our students’ achievement in the top 5% of sixth form providers nationally and the third best state funded school in the whole of the South West.
The Good School’s Guide, describes the Sixth Form as ‘the most impressive part of the school’, and so year 11 students can be assured that the best is yet to come! By national standards, we are a large school Sixth Form and this allows us to offer a broad and engaging curriculum. Yet we are of a size that allows us to cultivate a close and supportive learning community. Each student is known to us and valued by us as an individual.
In 2017, 73% of all A Level grades were A*-C with a 99% overall A Level pass rate. In recent years, our departments have performed at very competitive levels when compared to national departments with Art Photography, Philosophy and Ethics, English Language and English Literature all being ranked in the top twenty five of all school departments for their stunning A Level results. Our applied learning offer is also going from strength to strength with our Child Care department being recently ranked number one nationally for students’ results outcomes. Our Sports Academy is also growing in capacity with links to prestigious sports organisations, including Chelsea Football Club.
We run a yearly ‘Futures Day’ with invited guests from Higher Level apprenticeship providers, universities, the National Citizen Service, Gap Year providers and professionals from the Fire, Police and Ambulance Services. Sixth Formers work on their CVs, write personal statements, brainstorm ideas to set up their own businesses, and network with university admissions teams. We regularly take students to the Apprenticeship Show and the UCAS Convention in Exeter at Westpoint Arena to meet university Admissions staff. Our students bring such a diverse range of talents and we help them frame their applications to reflect this.
The pastoral care of our students is crucial at all times, and our Sixth Form is a safe and nurturing environment. A parent of one of our Year 13s endorses our care by saying: “I have always maintained that your Sixth Form is amazing. The pastoral care is so good, the students all come across as individuals; the staff know them so well, and always give extra time and effort helping them achieve their very best. I really cannot fault it.”
Our Sports Academy has grown in the last few years, on the back of our incredibly successful Chelsea Football Academy to include Rugby, Cricket, Golf, Basketball and Hockey Academies. Our Under 18 Hockey Team lads won the Team of the Year at the prestigious Teignbridge Sports awards, courtesy of them reaching two National Finals. Our Hockey tradition is assured, but many of the new student intake each year will join us as individual sports performers, focusing on a range of other sports from equestrian to table tennis.
