Hockey is another incredibly strong sport at South Dartmoor with players previously reaching international level whilst at College. We are delighted to have double-Olympian Jon Bleby as a consultant.
How often will I train?
Students will be timetabled for up to 5 hours of hockey per week, plus the opportunity for an extra 2-4 hours as part of Ashmoor Hockey Club, should you choose to join the community club. We have a strong relationship with Ashmoor Hockey Club which sees players having the opportunity to play regularly at a high standard, however you do not have to play for Ashmoor to play for the Academy – players at other local clubs may play too. Students will access the regular Sports Academy generic sessions for strength and conditioning.
What are my opportunities?
The Hockey Academy is led by Steve Dinnie, an ex-Welsh International player and is run in association with Jon Bleby. Jon is an England & GB player and now is the Great Britain Men’s Assistant Coach. Coming from Devon, Jon provides a great aspirational route for all players looking to gain representative honours. Steve is also the Head Coach at Ashmoor Hockey Club, who play in the Championship of the West of England/South Wales Hockey league – just 2 divisions below the National League structure. The Ashmoor HC Indoor team play in the National League Division 2 – just two divisions away from the Sky Sports Super 6s. College opportunities include England Hockey indoor and outdoor competitions plus British Colleges matches in the South West Division.
What will I study?
Hockey Academy students are free to pick any Sixth Form courses, provided the standard entry requirements are met.
