The uniform at South Dartmoor is a symbol of your aspiration to excellence and high achievement.
Your appearance is a measure of your self-discipline. It reflects your pride and commitment to being a member of the College, and is a visible sign of your readiness to learn.
We expect you to wear your uniform correctly and smartly at all times
- South Dartmoor Community College Blazer. Please wear blazers at all times when moving about the site, in assembly, in lessons and always when arriving at and leaving the canteen at lunch and break time.
- White shirt (of sufficient length to be tucked in) with collar and sleeves, worn smartly with the College tie
- Optional plain black V-neck jumper to be worn only under blazer
- Formal pressed, plain black trousers or black knee length skirt
- Plain black shoes with low heel
- Smart tailored shorts when permission is given in hot weather
Not acceptable for any student
- Hooded tops, cardigans, vest tops/t-shirts, tank tops worn over the shirt
- Jeans/informal/skinny trousers
- Trainers, Flip flops, open toe shoes/sandals
- Coloured logos
- Coloured undershirts, polo shirts
- The wearing of hats, scarves and outside coats indoors
If for any reason you are not in the correct uniform you must report to Student Reception as soon as you arrive in college.
Makeup and Jewellery
This should be kept to a minimum.
- a watch, a small single stud per ear and a plain signet ring
Your uniform is formal and as such you must not wear
- Extreme or excessive make-up
- Nail varnish
- Necklaces, bracelets (this is also for health and safety reasons as they are inappropriate in many lessons and can get caught easily)
- Non-College badges
- Facial studs or body piercing
- Extreme hair colour or style
You will be asked to remove makeup that is not discrete, nail varnish and any piercings (beyond one stud in each ear) before you attend lessons. Jewellery will be confiscated.
Equipment
We ask all students to respect the learning environment and arrive with
- pen, pencil, ruler, rubber
- planner
- items needed for specific subjects (eg PE kit, food ingredients, etc)
Arriving at a lesson without the correct equipment disrupts the learning of others as the teacher has to spend time helping you to fix the problem or providing you with alternative work to do.
Mobile Phones
We do not allow mobile phones to be used on site. This is to protect your privacy as many phones are able to video and photograph. We accept that due to the catchment area some parents may wish you to have access to a mobile. In this circumstance the phone must remain off and in a safe place. This is totally at your risk and we cannot be held responsible for loss or damage.
- If you are seen using a mobile during the college day or are found in possession of a mobile that is switched on it will be confiscated for the day.
- If staff time is wasted persistently by you breaking this rule then the phone will be confiscated and your parents will be expected to collect it from college at their convenience.
If you need to use the phone for an emergency during the school day please go to student reception to ask for permission.
Personal Music players
Many students make long bus journeys at the start and end of each day therefore they may wish to listen to music.
During the college day you can use your music player at lunch and break time only. Outside of these 2 times if you are caught listening to your music or you are still wearing your player it will be confiscated.
Because of the very strict guidelines we adhere to about mobile phones it is not acceptable to use these as music players during the college day
The college cannot take any responsibility for loss, theft or damage to these items
ANY ITEMS MENTIONED ABOVE THAT ARE CONFISCATED WILL BE HELD IN STUDENT RECEPTION.
Arrive at lessons ready to learn. You will show this by
- Being smartly dressed in the correct uniform at all times
- Arriving on time to lessons and assemblies
- Having the correct equipment for the lesson
Finally it is important that you know that all staff are expected to support the college by making sure that students cooperate with the college rules. Please respect this.
