South Dartmoor Sixth Form tops Devon League Tables

A Warm Welcome to the Sixth Form

Achievement is so strong at South Dartmoor Sixth Form; why consider anywhere else? The Good School’s Guide, describes the Sixth Form as ‘the most impressive part of the school’, and so our year 11 students can be assured that the best is yet to come! Our Sixth Form provides opportunities for students to make the most of their potential and broaden their horizons. A place with us is sought after by students and staff alike! By national standards, we are a large school Sixth Form and this allows us to offer a broad and engaging curriculum. Yet we are of a size that allows us to cultivate a close and supportive learning community. Each student is known to us and valued by us as an individual. We enjoy close working relationships with the parents and carers of our student community and this is something we consider critical in enabling our students to make a successful transition to becoming responsible and capable self-managers.

The 2015 Post-16 results at South Dartmoor place the College’s achievements consistently above the national average. They reflect the hard work and team effort played by students, parents and staff in the Sixth Form. In 2015, over half of all the A level results were graded A*-B. Art Photography and English Literature are both ranked in the top ten of all departments nationally for their stunning A Level results. The national Advanced Level Performance System analysis of our results ranks the college as ‘outstanding’ for the percentage of grades achieved that are ‘on target’ or above. In 2015 78% of grades pitched students in the top 25% of national attainment measures. Our vocational offer is going from strength to strength with our Child Care department being ranked number one nationally for students’ results outcomes. Our Sports Academy is also growing in capacity with our links to prestigious sports organisations including Chelsea Football Club and Plymouth Albion Rugby Club.

We are quite rightly proud of our reputation and success and delighted that we have excellent purpose-built facilities for the use of our Sixth Form students. The new buildings at Place House work well with the original Georgian mansion and offer students a professional learning and social environment, set in several acres of beautiful surroundings. The Sports Academy has access to first-rate facilities and the support of professional sports organisations, staff and services. Further to this, students wishing to combine elements of the Atrium Studio School provision with the standard Sixth Form offer may do so through applying for one the Atrium specialist subjects in conjunction with their other Sixth Form subject choices.

Students leave our Sixth Form enjoying academic success and as role models who will make a positive contribution to society. There are many extra-curricular opportunities, from contributing to the Sixth Form Council to World Challenge expeditions! Our pioneering work in consultation with Devon and Cornwall Business Council in creating The Employability Award serves to develop a breadth of qualities and interests that make our students stand out from the crowd. In addition to this, we have a dedicated Post-16 Careers Coordinator, who helps develop career aspirations and work experience placements for our Sixth Form students. ‘RISE’ is also in its third year; this is a very successful initiative to support students progress to prestigious and competitive University Degree courses; such as Medicine, Veterinary Science and Oxbridge and Russell Group Universities. Our most recent Ofsted report recognised that ‘Students benefit from good guidance on their destinations and many go on to valuable university courses.’

Our motivation as staff is to inspire and challenge; to continually strive to provide the best curriculum that will serve the needs and demands of our rapidly changing society. We have well established curriculum and pastoral systems that enable each student to respond successfully to the challenge of Post-16 education. At all stages, Subject Staff and Personal Tutors seek to guide students in ways that will maximize potential. A key principle of our Sixth Form is that we will not let any student underachieve.

All that we ask of students is a real commitment to their courses. Post-16 education at South Dartmoor Community College is very rewarding for students and staff. I look forward to working with you as you make the most of who you are in a friendly, supportive learning environment with excellent facilities.
