New Technology Hits Dartmoor
As you are probably already aware the cold weather has now really set in, as a result of this we have noticed that students are sensibly beginning to wear base layers underneath their PE kit both in lessons, for training and fixtures. This has prompted us to research a quality base layer that we can make available to students at the cost price to us. This item will be optional and students may continue to wear other base layers.

The SDCC personalised ‘Ignite’ base layer is suitable for all activities where you need to keep warm. The technology of the garment wicks moisture away from the skin and regulates the body temperature, it also protects the skin against the cold, helps improve performance and recovery and has an anti-bacterial coating preventing odour. It is available in junior, ladies and senior sizes. Please click here to read more about pricing and sizes available for this new and exciting piece of additional kit.

Key Stage Three Curriculum
Posted on January 7, 2008 by Dan Vile
Throughout Key Stage three students are taught 3 hours a week of Physical Education and Dance, a 12% time allocation. Students’ work is assessed in 8 weekly units and reported termly.
Links with Primary and partner Secondary schools feature significantly in our Sports College development plan and have been a major success, the department currently spend 9 hours a week working with colleagues and students in our feeder primary schools. Our Year 7 curriculum reflects the importance of this transition period by grouping students into mixed gender groups from the assessment data collected during Year 6. The Key processes of the modernised National Curriculum in Key Stage 3 PE include:
- Developing skills in physical activity
- Making and applying decisions
- Developing physical and mental capacities
- Evaluating and improving
- Making informed choices about health, active lifestyles
In years 7 and 8 these processes are delivered through a range of content that includes the following activities each year: Athletics (2 units), badminton, basketball, cricket/rounders, dance (2 units), football, gymnastics(2 units), health related fitness, hockey, netball, rugby and tennis.
In Year 8 students are set according to their ability and to their gender, these groups then continue into year 9. Student groups are reviewed by the department regularly which allows movement between groups.
The Key Processes in year 9 are delivered through a range of content that includes: Rock climbing, athletics, health related fitness, hockey, football, health, tennis, dance (2 units), gymnastics (2 units). In addition to this content students are able to personalise their learning by choosing their preferred activities in the following areas: games (2 units), net activity and a striking and fielding activity.

Core Physical Education
The aim at Key Stage 4 is to allow students to follow a personalised programme over the Key Stage, whilst keeping within National Curriculum parameters. Students choose one of three Pathways that offer a wide selection of programmes which include Games, Athletics, and Dance and Gymnastic activities.
The three personalised pathways are:
- Competitive Team Performance (CTP)
- Competitive Personal Performance (CPP)
- Participation and Healthy Wellbeing (PHW)
The CTP pathway develops performance within competitive team situations, whereas the CPP pathway develops performance within individual physical activities. Both assist the GCSE PE practical grading process. The PHW pathway provides knowledge and understanding of physical activities for continued health and wellbeing.
All pathways follow a unit in self defence (with an external instructor), health related fitness and rock climbing. In addition all students are able to choose to follow Sports Leadership programme and Dance course.
