National Curriculum Levels

NATIONAL CURRICULUM LEVELS APPLY TO KEY STAGE 3 YEARS 7/8/9

EP

The phrase Exceptional Performance (EP) is reserved for those students whose level of work exceeds the eight-point scale of the National Curriculum. The award of this level at any point during Key Stage 3 (Years 7, 8, 9) is an exceptional personal achievement.

Levels 7/8

By end of Year 9: working beyond National Expectations

During Years 7/8: If students in Year 7 or Year 8 are awarded these levels, they are performing exceptionally well and well beyond what would normally be expected of a student in that age group

Levels 5/6

By end of Year 9: National Expectations have been met.

During Years 7/8: If students in Year 7 or Year 8 are awarded these levels, they are performing well and working beyond what would normally be expected of a student in that age group.

Levels 3/4

By end of Year 9: Working towards National Expectations

By the end of Year 8: We would expect that most students were reaching at least a Level 4 standard.

During Year 7: National Expectations are that students arrive at Secondary School working at Level 4. A Level 3 is therefore an indication of working towards rather than at National Expectations.

Levels 1/2

A student may be awarded a Level 1 or 2 or 3 in Years 7, 8 or 9. Concern about a student's progress would grow if a student failed to move beyond this level as they progressed through the Key Stage.
French/German/Drama

A modern language, French or German, is started from scratch in Year 7. Progression through the grades will be faster. Similarly Drama begins from scratch in Year 7.

Levels are graded L = low, M = Middle, H = High

A 4L is a low 4, a 4M is a safe 4 and a 4H is starting to show the qualities of Level 5, etc
