Equipment for Learning

Ready to Learn letter - September 2009

All students are expected to be ready and equipped to learn when in lessons. Most of the following items can be bought in the College Stationery Shop situated just inside the Library. The shop is open every day before College, at break times, during lunchtimes and after College. The Stationery Shop is non-profit making. Prices are much cheaper than the high street.

For every lesson all students need:

  • a pen (and a reserve)
  • a pencil
  • an eraser
  • a ruler

For specific lessons:

  • Art: apron, 2B & 4B pencil, eraser, coloured pencils
  • Maths: pen, pencil, ruler
  • Maths & Science: a scientific calculator (Recommend: Casio FX 83ES)
  • English: a reading book*
  • Technology all years: coloured pencils
  • Technology Years 10/11: A3 folders

The following reference books are very useful when students are completing their independent home learning tasks:

  • World Atlas (Recommend: Collins Foundation World Atlas)
  • French/English and/or Spanish/English Dictionary (Recommend: Collins Easy learning Dictionaries)
  • Thesaurus (Recommend:Collins School Thesaurus)
  • Encyclopaedia*
  • Dictionary of Music*

TIPPEX: The use of TIPPEX is not allowed at the College or by Examination Boards

Labelling: All equipment and clothing should be labelled clearly with student’s name.

STUDENT INFORMATION - PE AND DANCE

All Lessons: A carrier bag, towel and soap should also be brought to all lessons. Pupils change at the start of the lesson placing all uniform into their own plastic bag. It is vital all kit is labelled with name on the inside and initials of student clearly visible on the outside in order to reduce loss.

Valuables: Try not to bring valuables to the changing rooms. If you hand in valuables before the start of lessons, they will be locked away safely for you.

Watches/jewellery/earrings: must be removed before activities.

Hair: must be tied back out of eyes.

Asthma sufferers: inhalers should be taken to lessons.

Injury or Excuse Notes: Requests to be excused from full participation in a PE lesson should be signed by your parent(s)/guardian(s). If you are excused from doing PE you will still be involved in lessons as substantial learning can still take place even if you are unable to take part fully and actively. You should therefore always change and bring appropriate additional clothing e.g. tracksuit and coat.

Safe Practice: In line with National Governing Body and Devon County Council Recommendations ALL Students must wear gum shields in Ruby & Hockey and shin pads in Football, Rugby & Hockey.
