Notice

Dear Parents and Carers,

Exciting times continue at South Dartmoor, on the back of last year’s fantastic exam results we have just come to the end of the exam season and look forward to even better results this August. 2013 saw our value added score at 1009, demonstrating that South Dartmoor students make much greater progress than children nationally where the expected figure is 1000.

Our success on the sports field is quite outstanding as we have had great years on the hockey and football fields as well as on the cricket pitch. There is too much great sporting news to detail here as a whole range of individuals have also excelled in their chosen sports, but I will pick out just one, Olivia Dobson has achieved the national qualifying standard in two athletics disciplines and will represent Devon in the high jump at the Nationals.

The sporting excellence of the College has also been recognised by the Youth Sports Trust who this week awarded South Dartmoor their Gold Partner award, the moderator commented, ‘ I learnt a lot about your school and the fantastic work that is taking place. Congratulations you are most definitely a Gold Partner school. I was really impressed with the breadth and variety of the curriculum and extra-curricular opportunities that is offered to the students in the school and how you are continuing to link PE and school sport to whole school standards. This is testament to yours and the teams continued passion, enthusiasm and hard work’.

We also received some lovely feedback from an Australian Head Teacher who is on an international research trip looking at high quality classroom practice. He has observed lessons in America, Ireland, England and Australia so far! The teaching he saw at South Dartmoor he described as being on a completely different to anything he had seen internationally.

A number of staff are leaving this summer to new roles, including Mark Gale to become an Assistant principal at Torquay Academy, Phil Randall to a Deputy Headship at St. Peter’s and Simon Ovens to a Head of Department post at St. Luke’s, we are sad to see them go but are excited about the new appointments we have made including Jim Lodge who will be joining us as Head of Science, from Maynard School, and Danny Murray who will be our new Head of Religious Studies.

There still remains a great deal to do this term. Our Year 11s, who have been a real credit to the College in their approach to their exams, are about to celebrate with their Prom at Seale Hayne. We are looking forward to the Summer Concert (July 10th at 7.00pm) which will see farewell performances from a number of students who have completed their time at South Dartmoor. Music, Drama and Dance are always of an incredibly high standard at South Dartmoor but this year we say goodbye to some students who have really lit up the stage, including our Ukulele Orchestra and our fantastic harpist Esther Beyer. Esther was selected to be part of the National Youth Orchestra, an incredible accolade, and has also gained a music scholarship.

Sports Day has been moved to July 10th and we look forward to an exciting day’s competition as Fox Tor attempt to retain their crown.

The last week of term is Enrichment Week and our students are spread far and wide! Final arrangements are being put in place and I would like to thank Jo Distin for the endless hours she has put into co-ordinating the week. I would also like to thank all of the staff in advance for the efforts they will put in to making the week a memorable experience for the children.

During the summer holiday two new Science Laboratories will arrive on site and will be online for September. During the Summer there will be improvements made to the dining facilities at the College. We are also hoping to develop the Design Technology facilities during the course of next year which looks like being another busy one.

Yours faithfully, Hugh Bellamy
