Praise and Consequence Systems

Managing Behaviour

Behaviour is managed through a system of praise and sanction.
There is are a series of structured steps for both praise and sanctions.  All staff follow the guidelines fairly and calmly.  The steps are clear, consistent and work both in and out of the classroom.
The terms P1-P5 and C1-C5 are used by all staff and understood by all students.

To gain a better understanding of our praise and consequence system we have illustrated 'Actions Have Consequences' posters in every classroom.

Praise - this system of reward is under review this year and we are speaking to staff and students about how to develop it!  Deserving Students will continue to receive Praise Cards from staff as before.

C1

Teachers implement a range of appropriate strategies. Students are told that their actions are putting the learning of others at risk.

C2 Formal Warning

The student has harmed the learning environment in the classroom. Their actions are SUSTAINED and/or DELIBERATE. They have not responded to previous strategies used.

C3  Parked

The students continued presence in the room will damage others learning. The student will be asked to leave the lesson and go directly to the Student Reception.

Students who are parked come directly to Student Reception.  They are then asked to state why they were parked and then reflect upon what happened. Teachers receive an email to confirm the student’s arrival at the Tor

NB- A single serious incident can result in an immediate C3 - in this case staff should email the Behaviour Coordinator and Performance Leader at the earliest opportunity with details of the incident.

Leadership Team Duty - When a student is parked a member of the leadership team will speak to the student and also visit the classroom and speak to the teacher.

Intervention

  • For students who struggle to conform to the expectations of the College we run an intervention programme. This is a six week intensive course (taking up 6 hours of lesson time) Also included in the programme is lesson observation of the student, some class support and recommendations to staff.

C4

Any students who are repeatedly causing disruption may be removed from a subject or subjects for a set period. This can also include lunch and break time. This will be followed by a restorative meeting, if this is appropriate, to mend their relationships and thus return to the learning community as soon as appropriate.

This process is coordinated by a member of the performance team.

No smoking - South Dartmoor Community College is a non-smoking site and any students caught smoking in or around the site or students associated with smokers will receive either a lunchtime or an after school detentionC4 Detention- Single Sanction

C5 Exclusion- Single Serious Incident or Persistent Disruption

  • The Performance Leader and Behaviour Coordinator decide if an incident necessitates exclusion and inform the Director of Student Performance
  • The Director of Student Performance advises the Principal if a student needs to be excluded
  • Restorative meetings form an integral part of the exclusion process

The Performance Leader and Behaviour Coordinator will assess each case and decide upon the most effective strategy that allows the student to

  • Repair the damage that has been done
  • Work towards being part of our learning community once more
  • Allows any person harmed by the incident to feel supported and reassured that they will not be harmed again.

Exclusion is always used if it is felt that other strategies cannot be used or have failed to work in the past and/or the student’s continued presence in College would put others at risk.

As a community we understand that the ultimate aim is to work towards inclusion.

Restorative Meetings

The Performance Team can refer students for a restorative meeting. This can be for issues between students, staff and students and also staff and staff. These may also include parents.

Staff and students can also request a restorative meeting.Restorative meetings enable everyone to move forwards. However, they are one of a number of strategies that can be used and in some cases are not appropriate.
